Transforming Education in Tourism, Hospitality, and Services
Tourism plays a significant role in India’s economic landscape, contributing 6.23% to the national GDP and supporting 8.78% of the country’s total employment, with approximately 20 million people engaged in the industry. In 2017, the overall impact of Travel & Tourism on employment, considering indirect support, accounted for 8.0% of total employment, equivalent to 41,622,500 jobs. Forecasts indicate a 3.1% increase in 2018, reaching 42,898,000 jobs, and a continued upward trajectory, expecting 52,279,000 jobs in 2028, constituting 8.4% of total employment.
The broad title of the Erasmus+ Capacity Building Project in Higher Education is entitled as “Advancing Sustainability and Technology in Tourism, Hospitality, and Services Studies through Strategic Industry Partnership (SIPAS)”. This project aims to develop various course modules, delivery mechanisms, integration of information and communication technology in the teaching-learning, collaboration opportunities between industry and academia, administrative governance ecosystem and modus operandi for project administration.
The projects objectives align with the priorities of the call by fostering innovation in higher education institutions in India, specifically targeting the labour market and societal needs through the development of four cutting-edge study modules and teaching methods in sustainable tourism, hospitality and services management, while also enhancing the capacity and international networking of higher education institutions (HEI) in India, Latvia and Portugal.

Agita Livina
Professor
Agita Līviņa is a Professor in the Faculty of Society and Science at Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences, and a Lead Researcher at the Institute of Social, Economic and Humanities Research (HESPI). She is a Chairperson of the UNESCO Chair Man&Biosphere in the institute. She is an expert of Latvian Council of Science in the field of
economics and management and environmental sciences. Her research interests include tourism planning, including heritage and protected areas, circularity and talent attraction for small and medium urban areas. She was a Fulbright scholar on research in 2012 at the University at Buffalo, the State University of New York, USA and full-time master student for one semester in the same university (2022 Spring). She received the Fellowship of the Government of India for the International training course in 2014 at the English and Foreign Language University in Hyderabad, India. She holds a PhD in regional economics since 2005 and a master’s degree in geography (regional development), bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences.

Dr. Mahendar is working as an Associate Professor and Head,
Department of Tourism and Hotel Management at Central University of
Karnataka, and also worked as an Assistant Professor at National
Institute of Tourism and Hospitality Management, India. An
academician with extensive experience in teaching, research, training,
and consultancy in tourism and allied fields. Committed to fostering
innovative and entrepreneurial education in tourism and hospitality,
contributing to sustainable development, and addressing local challenges
to align with global goals. Actively engaged in strengthening global
partnerships, enhancing industry-academia collaboration, and leading
impactful research, international projects, and joint programs that drive
meaningful progress in tourism, hospitality, heritage, and related areas.
He holds MBA in Tourism and Hospitality and Ph. D in Tourism.

Post Doctorate in Human Resource Management, and PhD in Sociology (Specialization in Sociology of Work, Organizations and Employment). Expert responsible for the European Quality Assurance in Vocational Education and Training EQAVET promoted by National Agency for Qualification and Vocational Education (ANQEP). Research member of RESILIENCE – Center for Regional Resilience and Sustainability, developing research in the areas of human resource management, strategic human resource management, organizational behaviour, sustainability, work practices, and industrial relations. Research experience in national and international projects, author of books, articles, books chapters, and member of scientific committees for several national and international events and indexed journals.
